I have never read this kind of book before, it’s about a man and a boy - his young son - walking alone through a burnt America after the Apocalypse. The book is very emotional, you not only feel it’s the end for the two individuals but for all of humanity as well.

I have never read this kind of book before, it’s about a man and a boy - his young son - walking alone through a burnt America after the Apocalypse.

The book is very emotional, you not only feel it’s the end for the two individuals but for all of humanity as well.

You go on the journey with the man and the boy, it’s very descriptive, you feel that you are on the road with them, walking through the damp burnt dying woods and taking shelter with them under their tarpaulin during the night.

You go from one disaster to another with them as they journey on towards the coast, dreading whats going to happen next. Thinking all the while that this could be reality, not wanting tobelieve it could be.

It shows the depths to which some humans will go to, to survive, the savagery of the strong against the weak, scary and terrifying.

All the while along the journey, the man is trying to be there for his son, to be there until the end, not wanting to leave him on his own, showing him how to survive, but at the same time showing him love and under standing, the boy always wanting to offer kindness and compassion to the few that they meet along the way, not fully understanding the dangers.

It’s a book that once you start, you will not want to put down, you want to get to the journeys end, it really does make you appreciate what we have, the beauty and the resources of our world as we know it, frightening to think what it would be like if they weren’t there, this book takes you to take place.

The series focuses on the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, England during the 9th-century reign of Alfred the Great, his fierce opposition to the Danes (Vikings), and his determination to unite England as one country. Really interesting and a good insight into the way life was.

I was lent this book by a friend and thought it was fantastic, it is the first Ken Follett book that I have read, as always when I find a author I like, I go line to find out more - that's when I found out I should have read 'Pillars of the Earth' first, but never mind I really enjoyed the book and 'Pillars of The Earth' has gone onto my list of books to be read.

The story is set in the years 1327 - 1361, in fictional town called Kingsbridge. It incorporates the 100 year war and the plague.

The main three characters being Caris, Merthin and Gwenda, who's lives you follow through the years, Caris almost being hanged, Merthin surviving the plague and Gwenda being sold by her father to be a prostitute. Amongst it all is are some devious monks, nasty nobles and intertwining love stories.

It really is an enthralling book, which gives you a vivid insight to what live was like, really makes you appreciate the era that you were born into.
